Here’s Afufu’s top ten anime opening acts. For an anime opening, I like something that catches attention. Something that goes with the beat, melody, or lyrics of the song. And most of all, it should be something I wouldn’t ever want to miss!

The bottom five (in random order):

Naruto – Haruka Kanata
Cowboy Bebop – Tank!
Gundam Wing – Just Communication
Magic Knight Rayearth – Yuzurenai Negai
X – eX Dream

#10-6:

#10 Sailormoon Super S – Just like Yuu Yuu Hakusho, the opening song has been used several times, changing only the video to adapt to the new season. Even though the art is old, each frame goes well with the song, and the opening where the scouts are standing on each pole were pretty cool.

#9 Excel Saga – Weird, but entertaining. The opening actually sums up the whole anime. Singing in a public men’s bathroom (with a kid staring at them)… the creator sure have a wide imagination.

#8 .Hack//Sign – A well choreographed intro, but I can say Hana Yori Dango did better. But overall, the opening reflected well on its (game) genre.

#7 Chobits – A unique anime opening, in a way that it has a very catchy song, but the characters` movements aren’t fast enough. What makes everything work was the background and the color combination.

#6 Great Teacher Onizuka – The opening with a story to tell. Great usage of black and white art. And the concepts used were impressive.

#5-1:

#5 Neon Genesis Evangelion – The first anime opening where I actually need to pause frame per frame just to catch a single image. At first it was quite slow, also the actions related well on the lyrics of the song, then it just suddenly became very fast.

#4 Lain – When I saw this, I was like floored. I was mesmerized by the english song used in the intro. And the ending part where everything just stopped moving except for the main character was totally awesome.

#3 Kodomo no Omocha – The 2-in-1 opening. The very fast frames you saw at the beginning were actually part of the first opening. Then it’s followed by a wacky dance, and end in an unexpected concept.

#2 Last Exile – Great combination of clips, and the techno soundtrack “Cloud Age Symphony” suited well.

#1 Ergo Proxy – Simply amazing! Just have the right amount of everything… from the introduction of the cast, some part of the show, added with the original clips in the opening, and the rock song that translated well the lyrics in the video.
